そこにはとても嫌な臭いが満ちていた。丸太でできた壁の内側からは、低くうなるような奇妙な叫び声と、何かを叩きつけるような金属の音。僕の背中を、冷たい汗がつうっと流れた。青い金属の鎧の下にはざわざわと鳥肌が立ち、細かな震えが脚を襲った。 

得体の知れない嫌悪感。それが僕を徐々に支配して動きを鈍らせる。それでも、確かめなければならない。彼のつかんだ情報が本当ならば、僕らは全力でそれを阻止しなければならないのだから。 





「そこで、皆さんにお願いがあります！」 

ブリテインの街をいつものように歩く僕の耳に、叫ぶ男の声が聞こえた。その方向を振り返ると、質素なプレートメイルを着たケン（Ken）と名乗る男が、小さな演説台の上に立っていた。人垣の外から見えるその男は、真剣な表情で人々に何かを訴えていた。 

「2匹のオークが、いったいどんな会合を行なっているのか、その目で確かめ、情報を集めてきていただきたいのです。」 

オーク？会合？どういうことだ？興味本位で話を聞いていた人々がざわめきだした。 

「何の話です？」 

隣にいた男に質問してみる。 

「ユーとコーブのオークの親玉が、何か企んでるらしいのよ。それで、どういうことなのか俺たちにオーク砦の様子を見て来いだとよ。」 

一人、二人とその場を立ち去って行く。オーク砦などという命を落としかねない場所へ、好き好んで行きたがるのは僕ら冒険者くらいのものだろう。 

「危険な場所であることは理解しています。だからこそ、我々に力をお貸しいただけないでしょうか。」 

ブリタニアの危機かもしれない。勇気を出して剣を掲げるべきだろう。僕は砦へ行くことにした。本当はそんな気持ちよりも、好奇心のほうがずっと大きくて、わくわくした。協力を求め、ゲートを開いたケンという名の男のあとに、僕は続いた。 

砦に着くと、丸太でできた壁のすき間からオークのしゃがれた話し声が聞こえてきた。ユーとコーブの2匹のオークの首領は、彼らの2つの集団で協力して、僕ら人間に総攻撃をしかけるつもりだ。オークは知能が低く、単独では決して強くない種族であるが、大集団で攻撃を仕掛けてくるとなれば決して軽視できないだろう。 

なぜか、嫌な予感がした。荒野に気まぐれに現れ、せいぜい山賊のように人間を襲うことしか能の無かったオークが、なぜ今こんな企みをしているのだろう…。僕の鼓動は速くなった。深入りしてはならない気がして、急に先ほどまでの好奇心はどこかへ消えてしまった。 

「オークめ！好きにはさせんぞ！」 

そのとき一人の戦士が、後先も考えず砦の入口へと駆け出した。それにつられて、興奮した冒険者たちが一斉に扉へ詰めかける。 

「…なニカ臭ウな」 

気づかれた…！ 

「お前ラ、戦エ！戦エ！」 

オークの首領は、手下のオーク共を呼び寄せ、僕らに総攻撃をかけるように命令した。 

「ちくしょう、気づかれたか…戦闘開始だ！」 

ケンの合図とともに、僕らは剣を抜き、魔法の詠唱を始め、ドラゴンを呼び寄せた。砦の外でも、中でも、オークたちと僕らの激しい戦闘が開始された。そして、砦の奥に姿を消したオークの首領たちの代わりに、巨大なオークブルートが暴れ出した。その巨木のような腕の一振りで、冒険者たちは吹き飛ばされ、地に叩きつけられた。ドラゴンの牙は子犬の噛み付きのように頼りなく、呼び寄せた精霊たちは不思議な力でかき消された。倒しても倒しても現れるオークの前に、僕は傷つき、消耗していった。 

次々と、冒険者たちは倒れていった。 

「くっ…ここはひとまず撤退だ！」 

どう見ても劣勢であることを察したケンは、すばやく街へのゲートを開いた。オークの斧に打たれ、血の止まらない肩口を押さえながら、僕は何とかそのゲートへ倒れこむように入った。かすむ意識で、僕はケンが悔しそうにつぶやく声を聞いた。 

「なぜ奴らは、我々人間へ攻撃を仕掛けようとしているのだ…何か大きな裏があるような気がしてならない…」 

ああ、僕の感じたあの嫌悪感は、ケンも同じように感じ取っていたのか…。 

僕の意識はそこで途切れた。親切に介抱してくれた魔法使いが、ケンはこのことをブリタニア評議会へ伝えるため戻っていったことを教えてくれた。 

あの日の出来事は夢の話であったかのように、まだブリタニアの風景は今までと変わらない。しかし、何かが確実に僕らの背後へと忍び寄っている。 

闇に紛れ、ゆっくりと静かに。
