These powerful undead creatures are the remains of once powerful human mages, who in their quest to become even more powerful, than they already were, abandoned their life and what was left of their humanity. Liches are, because of their past as powerful mages, extremely skilled in the ways of magic and it is not uncommon that experienced adventurers meet their demise at the hands of these unholy creatures, especially if they ran into more than one of them. Liches will occasionally summon a group of skeletons to their aid and then, to confuse the enemy, polymorph into a skeleton themselves. The skeleton will still be named as a lich though.
