The map which is created will be centered on your character's location.

How large an area is shown on the map depends upon your character's Cartography skill:

displayed height/width = (Cartography * 2) + 64

The map will always be displayed at 200 pixels by 200 pixels.

Cartography skill displayed area displayed size
0 64 x 64 200 x 200
50 164 x 164 200 x 200
100 264 x 264 200 x 200

While NPC Cartographers sell local maps with specific names, player-crafted maps will always show "Local Map" as the name.

The map which is created also depends upon which facet your character is located. In the past, crafting maps anywhere but Trammel or Felucca would create an # Indecipherable Map. Now, all facets except for Eodon can have maps created:

Facet Result
Felucca (Britannia) local area map
Felucca (T2A) local area map
Trammel (Britannia) local area map
Trammel (T2A) local area map
Malas local area map
Tokuno local area map
Ter Mur local area map
Eodon # Indecipherable Map
