オリジナルのブリタニアには、不死の宝珠（Gem Of Immortality）の破片、すなわち“シャード”があり、ウルティマ オンラインの世界はこの中に存在しています。ここに紹介するのは、シャード研究の第一人者であるひとりの魔法学者の評論です……

若輩魔法使いだったころの私は、その昔に異世界の来訪者が破壊した不死の宝珠の力について、思いを馳せたものだ。モンデイン（Mondain）は恐ろしい悪魔だった。彼は完全な形をしていた不死の宝珠の力を操り、全ソーサリアを手中に収め、たった一人ですべてを支配した。これをもし、善良にして高徳な人物が手にしていたなら、同様に強大な力を発揮して世界の悪を抹殺できただろうか？ 私は、宝珠が人の役に立ち、ブリタニアに悪が芽生えれば、片端から根絶されるという夢の世界に憧れを抱いていた。そのため、宝珠が破壊されてしまったことを悔やみ、別の方法でモンデインを倒し、宝珠を無事に奪い返す手立てはなかったものかと考えた。しかし、シャード研究を重ねるにつれて、かつて私を魅了したユートピアの空想は、無知な若者の青臭い夢物語に過ぎなかったと思い知るようになった。宝珠の中に、どす黒い怨念が封じ込められているという推測を裏付けるに足る証拠が出揃ってしまったからだ。
過去の評論でも解説したように、不死の宝珠は、破壊されると同時に私たちの宇宙と深い繋がりを持つようになった。その結果、それぞれの破片の中にソーサリアの複製が生じたのである。前回の評論では、そのすべての複製世界に私たちの複製が暮らしていて、それぞれ異なる人生を歩んでいる可能性があると私は述べた（私はときどき、私自身の複製もそれらの世界に存在するのか、また彼らはどんな人生を送っているのかを無性に知りたくなることがある）。複製ソーサリアは、私たちの目には宝珠の破片の中に浮かぶ小さな天体としか映らないため、その世界の詳細な様子を見ることは難しい。しかし、いろいろなことがわかってきた。シャードは、もともとの不死の宝珠の形をとどめてはいない。同様に、その中の複製世界も、元の世界とまったく同じではないのだ。各シャードのそれぞれの結晶面“ファセット”には、それぞれ異なる世界が存在する。比較的大きく、均一な形をしたファセットでは、私たちが住む元ブリタニアと比べると地形の一部にわずかな差異はあるものの、ほぼ正確な複製の世界を見ることができる。それに対して、小さく歪な形をしたファセットには、このブリタニアとは似ても似つかぬ世界が存在している。その住人たちの文明も、私たちが知るどの文明とも大きくかけ離れたものに違いない。通常はどのシャードにも、山脈に囲まれ白く浮き出た大都市を中央に構える大陸を有する、際立ったファセットと、南部に湿地帯、北部に砂漠という古代の地勢を残す原始大陸のファセットがひとつずつある。これはあくまで私の仮説だが、不完全な、ときとして鋭い角を持つファセットの形が、元はブリタニアの複製であったものを奇妙な別世界に変形させてしまったのではないだろうか。世界を収納している容器の形が変われば、空間、時間、魔法といったあらゆる要素も、新しい形の世界に適合するよう変化するはずだ。さらに、それぞれのファセットで、過去、現在、未来が新しい形と辻褄を合わせるように劇的に変化してしまっていることは十分に考えられる。つまり、時系列の遡及訂正だ。こうした世界の遠い昔や遠い未来に、いかなる奇怪な新文明が築かれたかと問われても、私たちの想像が及ぶところではない。
シャードの住民は、ファセット間を移動できるようだ。シャード内のひとつのファセットから別のファセットへの物理的な旅行はどう見ても不可能だが、魔法か、あるいはムーンゲートを使えば可能性はある。前にも述べたとおり、シャードの外から眺めることしかできない私たちには、正確なところはわからない。しかし、一部のファセットには、人類または高度な知的文明の流入によってのみ起こり得る変化が明白に現れているのだ。それまで明らかに無人だったあるファセットでは、城のような建造物が突然に出現した。また別のファセットでは道路が延びてゆき、森が切り開かれる様子を目撃している。そこに私は疑問を抱き続けてきた。これらのファセットは、なぜこれほど長い間完全に無人のまま放置されていたのか、それがなぜ今になって突然人の手が入るようになったのかと。そして今、私はひとつのヒントを手に入れた。それは、パズルの新しい局面を開く新しいピースだと私は信じている。
すべてのシャードには、ひとつだけ他とは明らかに異なるファセットが含まれている。私はそれを暗黒の結晶面、すなわち“ダーク・ファセット”と呼んでいる。ダーク・ファセットは、そこだけ光を吸収しているかのように、全体が闇に包まれている。そこにも世界が閉じ込められているのだが、それは私が夢想だにしていなかった世界だった。大陸は、全方位に広がる巨大な虚空の中央に位置している。まるで、暗い星の海の中に浮かぶ大きな島といった感じだ。自然の法則をどれほどまでに捻じ曲げれば、このような世界が存在可能になるのか、私には見当もつかない。世界全体が大きな魔法によって保持されているのだろうか。この謎は、残りの生涯をかけて考えても解明されることはないだろう。それどころか、知れば知るほど深まるばかりだ。
私は幾度となく、ダーク・ファセットで起こった天変地異を目撃してきた。少しずつ大陸が崩壊してゆくのだ。まるで巨大地震によって大地が切り崩され、その破片が次々と暗い奈落に落ちてゆくように見える。ダーク・ファセットでは、そうした大災害の度ごとに、そこに暮らす生命も一緒に消滅したかのように見える。それまで続いてきた人類社会の発達の印は途絶え、都市も闇の中へ消え去ってしまうからだ。しかし、あらゆる生命の痕跡が失われたと思いきや、やがてまたダーク・ファセットにどうした理屈からか文明が蘇る。そして、崩壊のプロセスが新たに繰り返されるのだ。これを踏まえて今、私の過去の記録を読み返してみると、ダーク・ファセットの世界が崩壊した直後に、同じシャードの別のファセットに人口の増加が認められる。このことから、ダーク・ファセットの大災害は、そこと繋がりを持つ他のファセットとの間に何らかの関連性があると結論せざるを得ない。障壁のようなものが崩れ始めているのだろうか。さらに私は、あのダーク・ファセットを包んでいる巨大な影が、モンデインの悪意を反映したものではないかと思えてならない。それは、ダーク・ファセットの中の世界と同様に、醜く捻じ曲がった怨念だ。
以上の謎は、シャードの中の世界に入り実際に探索しない限り、永遠に解くことはできないだろう。少し前までは、その奇怪な現実世界をぜひこの目で見てみたいと願っていたのだが、今は、その世界の住人に対する恐怖心が先に立つ。そこには、私たちの想像を絶する恐ろしい魔物が潜んでいるように思えてならないからだ。

When I was a young wizard, I thought about the power of the immortal treasure that a visitor from another world had destroyed. Mondain (Mondain) was a horrible demon. He manipulated the power of the perfectly shaped Immortal Gems, put all Sosaria in hand, and dominated everything by one person. If this was done to goodness and a virtuous person was holding it, could you have exerted a mighty power as well to kill the world's evil? I was longing for the world of dreams that the treasure is useful for people and evil in Britannia will be eradicated from one end. For that reason, I regret that the treasure was destroyed, I knocked down Mondain in another way and thought that there was no way to recover the jewels safely. However, as we pursued shard studies, we felt that the fantasy of Utopia, which once fascinated me, was only a stinky dream of ignorant youth. It is because there is enough evidence to support the speculation that dark blacken is contained in the treasure.
As I mentioned in the past reviews, immortal gems have become deeply connected with our universe as they are destroyed. As a result, copies of Sosaria occurred in each fragment. In my last review I stated that there is a possibility that our copies live in all its replicating worlds and each of them may be living a different life (sometimes my own copies are also placed in those worlds There are times when you want to know exactly what they are and what kind of life they are sending). It is difficult to see the details of the world because the duplication Sosaria only appears as a small astronomical object floating in the fragments of the treasure in our eyes. However, I have learned a lot of things. Shards have not kept the shape of the original immortal gem. Likewise, the replication world in it is not exactly the same as the original world. Different worlds exist in each crystal plane "facet" of each shard. In relatively large, uniformly shaped facets, we can see a nearly accurate world of reproduction, although there are slight differences in part of the terrain compared with the former Britannia where we live. On the other hand, there are worlds that resemble Britannia but are not similar in facets with small distorted shapes. The civilizations of the inhabitants must be far from any civilization we know. Normally, every shard has one facet of the primitive continent leaving an outstanding facet with a continent with a centrally located large city surrounded by mountain ranges and surrounded by mountain ranges, a wetland in the south and a desert in the north is there. This is only my hypothesis, but the shape of the incomplete, sometimes sharp corner facet may have transformed the original Britannia's reproduction into a strange alternative world. If the shape of the container containing the world changes, every element such as space, time, magic will change to fit the new shape world. Furthermore, it is fully conceivable that the past, the present, and the future have changed dramatically so as to match the new shape with the tsujiki in each facet. That is, it is a time series retroactive correction. Even if asked what kind of bizarre new civilization was built in such a long way or far away in the world, our imagination does not reach it.
Residents of Shard seem to be able to move between facets. Physical travel from one facet in the shard to another facet is impossible to see anyhow, but there is a possibility if you use magic or moon gate. As I mentioned before, we can not see exactly what we can only look at from the outside of the shard. However, in some facets there are obvious changes that can occur only by the influx of humanity or advanced intellectual civilization. A facet like a castle suddenly appeared in one facet apparently unattended. In another facet, the road has been extended, and we are witnessing how the forest is opened. I have kept questioning there. Why are these facets completely left unattended for such a long time, why has it become sudden now that people 's hands come in? And now I got one hint. I believe it is a new piece to open up a new aspect of the puzzle.
Every shard contains only one facet which is clearly different from the others. I call it a dark crystal plane, "dark facet". The dark facet is wrapped in darkness as if the light is absorbing there only. The world is trapped there, too, that was the world I did not make it a dream. The continent is located in the center of the huge empty space spreading in all directions. It's like a big island floating in the ocean of a dark star. To what extent do we bend the laws of nature, I have no idea how such a world can exist. I wonder if the whole world is held by the great magic. This mystery will not be elucidated even though thinking over the rest of his life. On the contrary, it is only deepening as I know it.
I have witnessed a celestial difference that occurred in the dark facet many times. The continents are gradually collapsing little by little. It seems as if the earth is broken down by a huge earthquake and that fragments fall down one after another into a dark paradise. In the dark facet, every time such a catastrophe happens, the life that lives there seems to have disappeared together. The mark of development of human society that has been continued until then has ceased, and the city has also disappeared into the dark. However, I think that traces of all lives have been lost, and eventually the civilization revives from the theory that I made to the dark facet. And the process of collapse is repeated newly. With this in mind, when I read back my past record, immediately after collapse of the world of dark facet, another facet of the same shards is allowed to increase population. From this, it is inevitable to conclude that there is some relevance between the catastrophe of dark facet and other facets connected with it. Is something like a barrier starting to collapse? Furthermore I think that the huge shadow wrapping around that dark facet reflects the malice of Mondain. Like the world inside the dark facet, it is an ugly twisted grudge.
These mysteries will enter the world inside the shard and will not be solved forever unless they actually explore. Until a while ago, I was hoping to see that bizarre real world by all means, but now fear of residents in the world comes first. It is because there seems to be lurking terrible evil that our imagination is unimaginable.
