2010-09-17: Robes, RPCs, and You!

Robes, RPCs, and You!

At a previous Hall of Commons meeting we were asked to put together a guide for interacting with our various characters as we exist within the realm. So without further adieu, I bring you:

Robes, RPCs, and You!

Within the realm we exist as one of two representations, either as Robes or RPCs. Let's talk about robes first. Whenever we are wearing our green robes, it is as an official representative of EA. We are generally out of character, save for some inherent zaniness, and are serving a specific function. During contests, we will always wear our robes, as these are non-fiction/non-story specific events. We do them just for the fun of it.

Then there are times when we have a bit of split personality and become one of the colorful characters you have all come to love (or hate). When we are on an RPC, or a role-played character, our actions, responses, and speech will be governed by that characters personality and the situation. For example, if you asked Her Majesty's Ambassador, Tavalia Zodok about a real life related topic, she'd look at you funny and suggest you get yourself to the healer at once. This is because as an RPC, we do not break character. Ever. The character only knows as much as it has seen, read, or been told and the availability of that information governs our behaviors.

Now let's talk about you...

When you are talking to EM Dudley or EM Drosselmeyer understand that you are talking to us, the guys behind the keyboard that try and bring the realm to life and make it as fun and exciting as the first time you heard Stones and logged into UO. As our robes you can ask us just about anything and we will try to give you a response. The robe is our out of character representation, so don't feel the need to treat us like the RPCs...but if you wish you definitely may do so! (thanks to Dross for decoding Niva's questions at the Hall of Commons).

When it comes to RPCs and you, interact with them however your character would act. If you are a handsome brigand and outlaw, Scarlet Von Trinsic would most certainly want to make your acquaintance, so talking with her is definitely a good idea...on the flip side you'd probable do best to avoid the Commander of the Royal Guard, Drake Foxx. You can also give the RPCs items based on their conditions. If an NPC is injured you can try to help them by giving them healing supplies. Just remember not to try and put food into an unconscious person's mouth...your actions will generate a response from the RPC and thus the story continues. The idea is to be creative and act however your character would, and remember to stay in character!

I hope this helps, any questions feel free to post.

Cheers!
