ムーングロウを奪回しようと武器を手に立ち上がった僕らだったが、止むことなく続くオークの襲撃に疲れ果てていた。しかしいつも僕らを率いてオークに戦いを挑んでくれるケンの姿が無い。彼はコーブ近郊のオーク砦を調査にいっているという噂なのだが。
「コーブ近郊のオーク砦から再びオークの軍勢が送りこまれようとしているようだ！」
タウンクライヤーが悲鳴交じりの声で叫ぶ。その声に、あたりに絶え間無く続いていた剣戟の音が一瞬止んだ。見渡せば、いつ終わるともしれない戦闘に疲れ果てた顔、顔、顔。そしてこんな時に僕らを導いてくれるはずのケンはいない。・・・もう、だめなのか？
「冗談じゃねぇ・・・。こんな、こんな形で俺の故郷を失うなんて嫌だ！俺はオーク砦へ行く！オークの企みなんかぶっ壊してやる！」
一人の男の叫びでその場の空気が変わった。武器を構えなおし、ムーンゲートへ走っていく者。後はまかせろ、と街を占拠しているオークに魔法を放つ者。僕も剣を握りなおし、ムーンゲートへと走った。
砦の中では、オークたちが戦闘の準備を整えていた。図らずも奇襲のような形で襲撃した僕らは、苦戦しつつも転送装置らしきものが設置されている場所までたどり着いた。しかしその部屋には結界が張られ、入ることが出来ない。そして部屋の中では一匹の金色のオークが忙しそうに何かの作業をしていた。僕らがその部屋に入れないことを知っているのだろう。そのオークは僕らを嘲るように転送装置の自慢をした後、憎々しげにこう言い捨てたのだ。
「ムーングろウ、オークの街、次の街ゲートつくル。そノ前ニ、俺お前達タオス。」
その後は、まるで阿鼻叫喚の地獄だった。傷つき倒れる者、それを癒そうとする者、金色のオークは爆弾や魔法を駆使し、傷ついた者に確実にとどめを刺そうとする。こちらの攻撃は金色のオークが呼び出した護衛に阻まれて届かない。しかし各地のタウンクライヤーが急を知らせてくれたのだろう、続々と援軍が現れ、ついに金色のオークも地に伏す時が来た。
その時、熱気に包まれているはずの砦の中を、何か冷たい空気が通った気がした。転送装置の部屋の中を見ると、そこには無残にも切り刻まれ、朽ち果てた亡骸が吊るされていた。側には見覚えのあるパイク。あれは、あれはもしかして？不安とざわめきが僕らの間に広がっていく。そして、亡骸の前に透き通った見覚えのある人影が現れた。
「さあ・・・後はやつらの企みを・・・叩き壊すだけだ・・・」
人影はそう呟き、剣を転送装置に振り下ろした。激しい爆発と共に転送装置は破壊され、部屋の結界も消えた。しかし同時に人影も薄れ、消えてしまった。あの人影は任務を果たすためこの世に留まったケンの亡霊だったのだろうか？僕らにそれを確かめる術は無いが、誰からとも無く亡骸に黙祷を捧げた。
こうしてオークの企みは阻止され、ムーングロウは平和を取り戻した。しかし忘れてはいけない。この平和のために命を捧げた人々がいたことを。そして、本当の闇はまだ去ったわけではないのだということも。
