ユーの浄化がついに成されました。
浄化へ向かって長きに渡って続いてきたその足跡も、その旅を終えようとしています。

突然起こった、Yewの緑化から数日経った今日、評議会からお呼びがかかった。
今日はどんな伝令かな？と思いながら城へ行くと、笑顔のエレイン(Elaine Bayfery)様と、何やら盛り上がっている、古の種族調査隊の面々があった。
「いらっしゃい。早速ですが、今日の伝令の内容を言うわね」
とびっきりの笑顔と共に、エレイン様の口から出た言葉は、これから、Yewに作成された門の完成を祝い、調査隊を古の里へ見送る為の式典を行う、というものだった。それで賑やかだったんだね。
「では、私はアドラナス(Adranath)師をお迎えにあがりましょう」「じゃあ俺は、細工師のアール(Earl)さんを・・・」
和気藹々。そんな雰囲気の中、一人だけ、浮かない顔してる人がいる。
「どうかしたの？ ケン(Ken)隊長？」
「あ・・・いえ、どうも僕は、こういうった大々的なことって、苦手でして・・・。」
そーいや、前から、そんな感じだったよね、この人・・・。いい加減、慣れればいいのに。
ブリタニア中のクライヤー仲間に、今日のことを伝えてもらっている間、あたしはYewに向かっていた。
既に大勢の冒険者が駆けつけている。ほんと、彼らの行動って、素早いなぁ。
町の一角が、急に騒がしくなった。細工師を迎えに行ってたアレックス(Alex)さんが来たようね。
続いて、エレイン様とケン隊長も、別の方向からやってきた。場が一気に盛り上がる。
集まった皆の中心にエレイン様が立って、Yewの町に突然出来た、空間の亀裂の説明をはじめた。
・・・・・・その横で、ケン隊長たちが、内緒話してるんだけど。何やってるんだか。
お話が一通り終わった後、ふと、アレックスさんが呟いた。アドラナス長老とリューベン(Reuben)さんがまだ来ない、と。そう言えばそうね。
とか言ってたら・・・噂をすれば何とやら。当の本人達がやってきた。・・・何か息があがってるけど。
どうやら彼ら、途中でジュカ族の奴にからまれてたみたい。ミーア族とジュカ族って、犬猿の仲だもんねぇ。
ま、いくらなんでも、町の中にまでは追ってこないでしょ・・・って思ってたら、追ってきたし！
瞬時に、その場が臨戦態勢になる。こういう時の冒険者って、生き生きしてるよね。
ほどなくして、ジュカ達は引いていった。まったく、人騒がせなんだから。
エレイン様、本当は、和やかにゆっくりと、式典を行うつもりだったらしいんだけど、こんな妨害があったんじゃあ、ゆっくりしていられない。
ケン隊長が、アールさんに何かを手渡した。あれは、最近まで城にあった、噂のクリスタルボール？
なるほど、アレを門に取り付ければ、ポータルってやつが開くのね。
話を聞いたアールさんが、力強く頷いて、身軽に門の上へと登っていった。
そして、クリスタルボールが、門の一番高いところに、固定される。
すると・・・門の中央に、光が現れた！ あれが、ポータルなんだ！
歓声が響く中、申し訳なさそうに、ケン隊長は言った。
「本当は皆さんと共に、古の里へ行きたかったのですが、それではあらぬ誤解を招きかねません。今日のところは、僕たち調査隊と、アールさんとで、古の人たちに、会いに行こうと思います。」
そりゃそうよねぇ。攻め込むんじゃないんだし。って・・・アールさん？
あれ？と思ったのは、エレイン様も同じだったらしい。どういうこと？
ケン隊長が言うには、これだけの技術を持つ人が一緒に来てくれれば、古の人に好印象を与えるってことらしいんだけど・・・。あ、ひょっとして、さっきの内緒話って、これのこと？
そういえばアレックスさん、なんだか悪戯が成功した子供みたいな顔になってるし。間違いないね、これは。
結局、それで説得されちゃったエレイン様。ケン隊長に、アールさんを必ず連れ帰ることを条件に、彼の同行を許可してしまった。ケン隊長は、それに、全員で帰るって、力強く答えてた。
そして、旅立ち。彼らは、一人、また一人、光の中に飲み込まれていった。大勢の祝福を受けて。
彼らを見送って、少し、しんみりとしていたら・・・門の中央で輝いていた光が・・・消えてしまった！
その場のみんなが、驚く。あたしだって同じ。何が起こったの！？
調べようにも、ポータルに関して、一番詳しかった調査隊の面々は、この場にはいない。
色々な憶測が出てくるけど、どれが正解なのかは、誰にも判らない。
みんな、複雑な顔をしたまま、今日は解散になった・・・。
んー・・・途中までは良かったんだけどなぁ。今日はちょっと、叫びにくいかも。
でも事実を伝えるのが、あたし達の役目だもんね。うん。
今日は、こんな感じかな？
「最新情報！ 調査隊はユーの町のポータルをくぐり、古の種族の待つ場所へ出発していった！ しかし、彼らが出発した後ポータルは消えてしまったようだ・・・。」

「・・・なあ、聞いたかよ！」
「いえ、全く。」
カウンターの片隅をいつものように陣取るジョージ(George)が、たまらず沈黙を破ったのは、8杯目のワインが運ばれてこようかという時のことだった。
いつもと違うのは、彼がここに1人で来ているということ。
「なにが全くだよ、おめえ。俺の相棒、ジャン(Jan)がどこに行ったか知ってるかよ」
「いえ、全く。」
「あいつも一緒に異世界へ行っちまったんだよ。俺の包丁裁きを認めるのは、あいつらしかいない！つってよ、調査隊だかに入ったって話だ。」
「へえ」
「だいたい異世界ってのは何なのよ。けったいな泥人形がドア開けて、どうぞお入りくださいってんだ。そんなとこ行ってジャンのやつ、帰ってこれる気でいるのかね全く。」
「ああ、それで・・・。」
マスターはそんな話どころではなかった。
ある日店を閉めようという頃、ジャンが突如やってきて、大量の臓器を持ってきた。
何の臓器だ、どこで採れたものだと聞いてもジャンはニタニタと笑うばかり。
世話になったせめてもの礼だ、とジャンは笑って店を出たが、保冷庫の隙間を食いつぶす彼の土産は、ただの悪臭の源にしか成り得なかった。
「でもよう、あいつのことだ。きっと元気で帰ってくるんだろうがよ、 気になるのはその調査隊の隊長って奴のことよ。」
「隊長。」
「なんでもKenとか言う暗い野郎が隊長になったそうなんだが、そいつ、木偶の坊らしいんだよな。」
「木偶の坊。」
「例の泥人形が動くために魂が必要だっつー話はこの前しただろう？んで、てめえ自ら泥人形の魂になっちまったらしいんだよ。残された体は立つだけ、歩くだけ、食うだけ、だよ。泥人形は動かなくなっちまう、体は何も考えねえ。実質死んだも同じだよな。」
「・・・最近はそうでもないようですよ」
「なんでぇ、話聞いてたのか」
マスターは倉庫の奥から、怪しげに輝く石を運んできた。
石に刻まれた文様は、人為的に書かれた「魂」という文字にも見え、その文字が一層の怪しさを醸し出していた。
しばらくの沈黙の後、緑色の光に照らされたマスターが、薄ら笑いながら、こう呟いた。
「これね。よくは知らないのですが。人間の知識、経験。言い換えれば魂なのかもしれませんね。そういうものを封じ込められるらしいのです。もちろんそれを体という入れ物に戻すこともできるらしいんですよ。」
「それじゃその隊長ってのも！」
「・・・さあ、それはわかりません。」
マスター会話の区切れを見つけ、石を倉庫に戻すと、はたとなにかに気づいたように保冷庫へ向かい、石とは違うなにかを皿に載せ、足取り軽く戻ってきた。
「そういえばジョージさん、珍しいものがあるんですよ。」
「へえ、なんだい？」
「刺身ですよ。チーズばかりじゃ飽きるでしょう。たまにはこういうものも。」
「ほう、気が利くね。どれどれ・・・。うはっうめぇ、美味だなこれは。ワインが何杯でも進むじゃねえか。ところでこれは、どこで採れた何の刺身なんだい？」
「・・・さあ、それはわかりません。」

萌える緑が目に眩しい。
木々のざわめきが耳に心地よいと感じる日。
思えばボクが調査隊に加わって彼と出会い、めまぐるしく時は過ぎた。
彼をライキュームの特別資料室で見かけた時は、蝋燭の明かりの中で資料を探しまくる姿があった。
ボクが彫刻家に話を聞き、その孫娘を必死で説得し彫刻家の凍りついた心を開かせたのも彼である。
たくさんの冒険者達が大地に力を与え木を育て、石を集め彫刻家が台座を彫った。
大地のひび割れた歪みから浄化は始まったのだが、不完全と思われる浄化を調べるためにボク達はポータルを開いた。
そこにいたみんなが祈りを込めてポータルを開いたとき、そこには何かのズレがあった。
彼の機転で古の記憶をもった果実をポータルに投げ入れることにより、それは修正された。
ボクが見てきたケン（Ken）という人。
一生懸命で涙もろい。
これから未知の場所で困難に出会っても、きっと彼ならその情熱で乗り越えられるであろう。
遠い昔、夢追う民に光ありき
その民、情と意志と力を持てり
彼らは大地を動かし、石を削り、山を造り、川を通した・・・
ボク達は時代を繰り返し新しい世界へと移り住んでゆくものなのかもしれない。
この思い通じたるならば、いかなる秘密を教えられんや
巷の喧嘩は押し黙らん・・・
美しい森が甦ったユーの町。
そして、そこには新しい世界への扉がある。
霧に織り込まれ、歳月の帯は巻かれてゆく
しかし我は同朋に言う「彼らはここにいる」と・・・
ポータルをくぐれるのはたった2人。
ボクはケンの目を見た。
「行くぞ！リューベン（Reuben）」
言葉にならなくても、ボクにはそう思えた。
ボクは迷わずポータル飛び込むことを決意した。
ボクはケンのように、希望を捨てない人であり続けたいと思いながらその扉をくぐったのであった。
多くの人が関わった古の人々との再会。
切り倒された古代樹の横にはこぼれ落ちた果実の種から芽吹いた小さな木があった。
その木はいずれ成長し、その扉をくぐる者達を見守り続けるに違いない。

「わぁー。綺麗になったものね。それにこのキラキラ光る門、素敵ね。」
散歩がてらに立ち寄ったユーの広場にできた「ポータル」を見て、彼女は嬉しそうに僕の顔を見た。
「この門・・・ポータルが古の種族の里へと繋がっているんだよ。」
「へええ。そこって誰でも行けるの？」
「ああ、行けるようになったのさ。もっとも、行き来できるようになったのはつい最近の話だけどね。」
彼女がポータルの周囲の輝きと戯れるのを見ながら、僕はポータルが開いた時の事を思い出していた。
ケン（Ken）隊長と細工師のアースキン（Erskine）さん、そしてリューベン（Reuben）さん。
彼らがこの地へ赴いた時、僕も偶然他の冒険者達とその場に居合わせたのだ。
冒険者の一人の話によると、一度は開きかけたポータルは不安定だったという。
ところが不安定ながらも、古の里からと思われる魔力によって、ユーの大地は浄化されつつあったらしい。
だが、ユーの街中にはまだ不穏な青い光や呪いの爪痕が残っていたそうだ。
それを完全に浄化させるためにもポータルを開き、古の種族に会いに行くとケン隊長は言った。
しかし、ポータルを開くために必要な物がわずかしかなく、片道切符になってしまいかねないといった状況だった。
それにも関わらず、ケン隊長の決意は固かった。それに感銘したのか、細工師のアースキンさんも同行することを決め、イヨナ（Iyona）様から申し付かっているからと言って、リューベンさんも調査隊に加わっていた。
同行していたエレイン（Elaine）様は、必ず戻ってくるようにと念を押していたっけな。
ケン隊長が不思議な呪文を施すと、ポータルは眩く輝きに満ちた。すかさず飛び込む3人。
あっという間に閉じてしまったポータルを、僕はぽかんと口を開けて眺めるしかできなかった。
その後、調査隊がどうなったかは評議会から直接語られる事はなかったが、街にはいくつかの噂が流れていた。
ひとつ、ポータルが完全に開いた日に、ウィザーズハットにマントを纏った若い男性が目撃された事。
その人はポータルの輝きを眺めた後、どこかへと去っていったらしい。
ひとつ、見たこともないような細工品がお城へ献上されたという事。
それを持ってきた人のハンマーは、ポータルと同じようにキラキラしていたらしい。
ひとつ、調査隊は3名だったはずだが、消息が全く掴めない人が一人いるという事。
ただでさえ謎が多い人物だったが、このことが彼のことを余計に謎多き人にしたようだ。
僕はその噂を聞いて、きっと3人は無事に任務を終えたんだと思った。
確信はないけれど、ポータルが今ここに開いているということはきっと・・・・・・
「ほらー、早く！来たからには勿論行くんでしょ？古の里に。」
はっと我に返ると、彼女はちょっと頬を膨らまして僕の顔を覗きこんでいた。
「あ、ああ。行こう！」
ケン隊長が開いてくれた道を、今度は僕と彼女がくぐろうとしている。
やれやれ、今日のデートは長くなりそうだ。
