カスカ（Casca）は自分の部屋でチェスボードを眺める。 カスカの相手は、誘いの手にのってきていた。
「これで、ある程度はこちらの思い通りに事が運ぶようになる。このまま一つ一つ確実に進めていけばいずれチェックメイトだ。さて、次はどの手が一番効果的か……」
カスカは思案する。
「敢えて、大胆な一手というのも一興か」
カスカはロイヤルガードを呼び指示を与えた。カスカが選んだロイヤルガードは、華やかというよりも、むしろ、冷たく暗い雰囲気があった。
「次はサーペンツホールドだ！ 事を成すための準備だ！」 「はっ」
指示を受け、部屋を去ろうとするロイヤルガードの背中に向けてカスカは続く言葉を投げた。
「行動の準備は秘密裏に行う必要はないぞ。むしろある程度は意図的に計画を漏らすのだ」
ロイヤルガードは足を止め振り返る。
「我が君、それはどういう意味なのでしょう？」 「居残っている害虫の退治もしてやろうと思ってな。獲物をおびき出すには餌が必要だ。人参がダメなら、チーズを差し出す。それだけのことだ」
